How to use the power-to-weight calculator

  1. Enter your FTP (or any power figure) in watts.
  2. Enter your body weight and choose the unit.
  3. Click Calculate to get your W/kg and category ranking.

Raising your W/kg

There are only two levers: increase sustainable power through structured training, or reduce non-functional body mass. Most riders improve fastest by raising FTP while maintaining a healthy, fuelled weight rather than over-restricting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good power-to-weight ratio?

Around 2–3 W/kg is recreational, 3–4 is a strong club rider, 4–5 is a competitive amateur, and 5.5–6+ at FTP is professional level.

Why does W/kg matter more than raw watts?

On climbs you must lift your whole body against gravity, so power relative to weight, not absolute power, determines how fast you go uphill.
