Raising your W/kg
There are only two levers: increase sustainable power through structured training, or reduce non-functional body mass. Most riders improve fastest by raising FTP while maintaining a healthy, fuelled weight rather than over-restricting.
Why W/kg decides climbing performance
On a climb you must lift your entire body and bike against gravity, so power relative to weight, not raw watts, determines how fast you ascend. This is why a lighter rider with modest absolute power can drop a more powerful but heavier rider on a steep gradient.
On the flat, raw watts matter more because you are fighting air resistance rather than gravity, which is why heavier riders often excel in time trials and sprints.
