How to use the pace calculator

  1. Choose your unit (kilometers or miles).
  2. Fill in any two of the three fields: distance, time, and pace.
  3. Click Calculate to get the missing value and your splits.

Pace vs. speed: what's the difference?

Pace is time per unit distance (minutes per km/mile) and is how most runners think about effort. Speed is distance per unit time (km/h or mph). They describe the same thing inversely: a faster pace means a higher speed.

Using splits to race smarter

Even or negative splits β€” running the second half of a race as fast or faster than the first β€” are strongly associated with better finishing times. Use the per-km splits above to set realistic checkpoints for your goal race.

Frequently asked questions

How is running pace calculated?

Pace equals total time divided by total distance. For example, running 10 km in 50 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per kilometer (50 Γ· 10).

What is a good running pace for beginners?

Many new runners are comfortable around 7:00–8:00 per kilometer (11:15–12:50 per mile). The right pace is one where you can still hold a conversation.

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometer?

Divide your per-mile pace by 1.60934. A 8:00/mi pace is about 4:58/km. This calculator switches between units automatically.
