The four components of passer rating
NFL passer rating combines four elements: completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown percentage, and interception percentage. Each is capped and scaled, then combined into a single number on a scale that tops out at a 'perfect' 158.3. It rewards efficient, productive passing while punishing turnovers.
Reading a passer rating
A rating around 90-100 is solid starting-quarterback play, while the league's best routinely post triple digits across a season. Because the formula caps each component, a quarterback cannot inflate the rating with one extreme category; balanced efficiency across all four is what produces an elite number.
