- Click Calculate for your total and moving time.
Transitions are free speed
Many triathletes overlook transitions, yet a minute saved in T1 and T2 counts exactly as much as a minute saved on the bike β and it is far easier to find.
Do not forget transitions
Triathlon is a four-part race: swim, T1, bike, T2, and run. Transitions are 'free' time where seconds are easily lost or saved, and over a season many athletes find more improvement in slick transitions than in marginal fitness gains. This calculator includes them so your projected finish is realistic.
Pacing across three disciplines
The art of triathlon is arriving at each leg with enough left for the next. Overcooking the bike is the classic error that wrecks the run. Use your projected splits to set conservative early efforts, especially on the bike, so you can run to your potential rather than survive.
Frequently asked questions
Do transitions count in triathlon time?
Yes. Your official time runs from the swim start to the run finish, including both transitions, so T1 and T2 are part of your result.
How long are triathlon transitions?
Age-group transitions typically take 1β3 minutes each; fast athletes are quicker. Practising transitions is an easy way to save time.
How long do transitions take?
Anywhere from under a minute for sprint specialists to several minutes in long-course racing. Practising transitions is one of the easiest ways to find free time.
Which leg should I pace most conservatively?
The bike. Riding within yourself preserves the legs for the run, where most races are won or lost. A hard bike almost always costs more run time than it gains.
How do I estimate my overall triathlon time?
Add realistic splits for each discipline plus transition times. Use your open-water swim, cycling, and running paces rather than pool or flat-road bests.
