Treadmill Pace Converter
Turn a treadmill speed and incline into the equivalent outdoor running pace, accounting for the effort the incline adds.
How to use the treadmill pace converter
- Enter your treadmill speed in mph or km/h.
- Enter the incline percentage (1% is commonly used to mimic outdoor effort).
- Click Convert to see your equivalent outdoor pace per km and mile.
Incline changes effort, not just speed
Adding incline raises the oxygen cost of running at the same belt speed, so your equivalent outdoor pace is faster than the belt number suggests. Steeper inclines widen that gap significantly.
Frequently asked questions
Why set the treadmill to 1% incline?
Running on a flat belt is slightly easier than outdoors because there is no air resistance. A 1% incline roughly compensates for that at typical running speeds.
How is the equivalent outdoor pace calculated?
We use the ACSM running metabolic equation to find the oxygen cost of your treadmill speed and incline, then find the flat outdoor speed that costs the same β and convert it to pace.
